The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 requires educational institutes to cater for enrolled children who, due to a physical or mental impairment, are less able to fully access the range of facilities the Tuition Centre offers.
Voxly Tuition is committed to providing excellent, high-quality tutoring for all pupils. We recognise that the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, as amended by the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 (DDA), places a duty on all public sector authorities to promote disability equality. As part of these duties, educational institutes are required to publish a Disability Access Policy.
This policy sets out the criteria to be followed and ensures that the Tuition Centre fully complies with its legal obligations. At the heart of this policy is our belief that Every Child Matters. All staff strive to ensure that, where reasonably possible, no child is placed at a disadvantage.
The general duty requires public authorities to adopt a proactive approach, mainstreaming disability equality into all decisions and activities.
The Institute must have due regard to:
The Institute will use the definition provided by the DDA:
“A person is disabled if they have a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.”
This policy recognises that there is no longer a requirement for a mental impairment to be clinically well-recognised. In line with recommendations from Disability Equality in Education, Voxly Tuition accepts that all pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and those with long-term medical needs should be treated as disabled for the purposes of the Act and for equality.
The Head of Department, Department Supervisor, and Management—who have experience working with physically disabled pupils—have been involved in the development of this plan.
Consultation with Pupils
The Tuition Centre will consult with pupils through:
Our tutoring staff are equipped to comprehensively plan for the needs and wellbeing of all pupils. The Institute will ensure that reasonable adjustments to working conditions are observed and provided where necessary.
For Staff
For Pupils
The Tuition Centre values staff development and encourages all staff to train and develop their skills.
The Institute will also take appropriate steps to communicate to all staff, children, and parents that harassment or bullying of any kind will not be tolerated.
All proposed physical changes to the Tuition Centre buildings and grounds will be considered from an accessibility perspective before they are implemented.
The accessibility plan will be amended as appropriate to reflect any physical changes to the Tuition Centre environment.
All learning opportunities will be made available to every pupil, regardless of disability. Staff will consider any reasonable adjustments that may be needed.
Where the Institute has knowledge of a child’s disability, reasonable adjustments will be made to learning situations—including communication styles, teaching methods, and differentiated curriculum.
The Institute has effective assessment and monitoring policies for all children, specifically those considered to be disabled.
These systems enable effective transition planning and activities for all pupils.
The Institute will also consider its risk assessment guidelines as part of the physical intervention policy in relation to disabled children. This enables staff to:
The Institute will strive to ensure that parents and carers receive the support necessary to enable their children to make progress.
The effectiveness of this scheme will be reviewed and evaluated by Management at least annually.
